The Ann Arbor area is well-known for artistic and creative events and attractions. 2016 brought back plenty of classic Ann Arbor events, as well as a few newer and exciting endeavors for creative types. Click the links below for a re-cap of the best creative features in 2016.
Creativity in the Air: Dexter Plein Air
The charming (and creative!) town of Dexter, just a few minutes west of Ann Arbor, hosts a yearly painting festival that takes place outdoors. In 2016, consisted of plenty of painting in the summer sunshine, plus a two-day exhibit and silent auction. Fun for the whole family, the Plein Air Festival held a Children’s Chalk Art event in Monument Park on Saturday, with the appearance of beloved local artist David Zinn, whose chalk creatures have been popping up around Ann Arbor for years. Complementing the visual arts were two musical groups — a jazz trio and an orchestra chamber quartet. Don’t miss this event next year from August 14-19, 2017.
Foolishly Fun: Festifools and FoolMoon
Each April, Ann Arbor gets super silly, celebrating spring and kicking off the outdoor festival season. FoolMoon is a nighttime extravaganza of luminaries, puppets, music and merriment. Its partner event, Festifools, is a huge, magnificent event that centers around larger-than-life puppets frolicking down Main Street. 2016 marked the tenth year of the festival, and 2017’s events are sure to be just as foolish! Join us April 7 & April 9 for a weekend of foolish adventures.
Pop into POP-X
One of the newest festivals on the arts scene in the Ann arbor Area, POP-X celebrated its second year in 2017. Free, open to the public, conveniently located and completely unique, POP-X features pop-up pavilions in downtown’s Liberty Square, with artists featuring their best work for ten days straight.
Ann Arbor Knows Film
The Ann Arbor Film Festival has been around for 54 years — that’s right — fifty-four! In 2016, 40 programs were chosen from over 3,200 submissions from 35 countries. This year, Visit Ann Arbor offered some tips for making the most of the Festival — because make no mistake, this is not your average trip to the movies. Look for the 2017 Festival from March 21-26.
