Welcome Back to Ypsilanti!

Aug 16, 2017

Welcome back students! I know you’re excited to see your friends and get settled into your home-away-from-home. Whether this is your first year or last semester as an EMU Eagle, U-M Wolverine, or a member of the WCC Wolfpack, Ypsi holds new adventures, great coffee, and college-budget friendly meals. I’ve spent my summer exploring Ypsilanti and have the inside scoop on the best places to check out.

Cross Street CoffeeCoffee Stops

As college students, we know a good cup of coffee when we see it. Luckily, Ypsilanti has been blessed with some of the best in the coffee world. For a superb cup of joe, try Hyperion. Roasted right here in Ypsilanti, these beans have become quite popular since they opened about a year ago. Or for a tried-and-true option, stop at Cross Street Coffee. Originally known as the Ugly Mug, this local coffee shop and roastery has been caffeinating college students for over a decade.

Places to Study

Ypsilanti has great study spots if you know where to look. Beezy’s at the Ypsilanti District Library is a great place to snack and study. Inspired by the local hot-spot in downtown Ypsi, this Beezy’s satellite cafe offers fresh soups and sandwiches in addition to coffee, hot teas, and cold beverages. Or stop by Sweetwaters, just off of EMU’s campus. Free wifi, perfectly brewed coffee and tea, and fresh pastries await you.

Ypsi Dates

Impress your date with more than just dinner and a movie. Swing by Ollie Food and Spirits or Casablanca for dinner before exploring one of the museums in Ypsilanti. Many are free or under $10 per person. My favorite is the Yankee Air Museum. Here you'll find Ypsi’s WWII history on display. The adjacent Willow Run Airport built thousands of B-24 bomber planes and was home to the original Rosie the Riveter. Stop by to try the hands-on exhibits!

Curious about arts and culture? Ypsi has that too! Check out a sensational performance by the Ypsilanti Symphony Orchestra during one of their Sunday afternoon shows. Or head over to the Riverside Art Center, where you can experience visual art exhibits, take dance classes, or catch a musical performance. End on the night on a sweet note with ice cream from Go! Ice Cream or delectable pastries from Cream and Crumb.

Time for R&R

Between studying, classes, and work, it’s important to take a few moments to unwind. Need a little retail therapy? With stores like Love at First Try, Friends Closet, and Puffer Reds, it’ll be easy to find new additions to your wardrobe. If you’re shopping for gifts, check out The Rocket or The Eyrie for unique Ypsi souvenirs and trinkets.

If you're a nature lover, you've come to the right place! Grab a book and stop by Riverside Park or Frog Island Park for a relaxing afternoon under the sun. Sit in the big yellow Ypsi chair alongside the Huron River and take a walk over the tridge into Depot Town. There’s nothing like a peaceful day in Ypsi.
