Top 5 Things to Do While Visiting Ann Arbor This Winter

Nov 28, 2017

While many think of Ann Arbor as the home to the University of Michigan and it’s lively football Saturdays in the fall, we’re here to show you how much more Ann Arbor has to offer, even during the chilly winter months! Here at Bivouac, our goal is to outfit your life with everything you need — whether you’re embarking on your next adventure or getting dressed for a night out, we have everything you may need for your time here in Ann Arbor and beyond. Whether you’re here for business or pleasure (or a bit of both!), we want you to enjoy every moment of your visit. Since we have been in the neighborhood for a bit — 46 years to be exact — we wanted to share with you some of our favorite things to do in the colder months.

1. Get Outside

We know what you’re thinking — “Go outside?? In the winter?!” It might seem crazy at first but Ann Arbor has plenty of great places to enjoy the fun that winter has to offer.

Looking to get your heart rate up? Ann Arbor has many great parks that are open all year long. If you want to Trail Run, X-country ski, walk, some of our staff picks are Bird Hills or Nichols Arboretum (“The “Arb” as it’s affectionately known) which offer many different trail routes! Make sure you find the correct balance of layering to stay warm, but not too warm that you overheat! When dressing for these activities, keep the “10 Minute Rule” in mind. Dress so that you feel cold for the first ten minutes — because you don’t want to overheat after being in an aerobic state for a duration.

If you’re visiting and forgot your gear, Bivouac is the perfect place to stop in! Here’s what we suggest for these activities:

  • Trail running shoes or light hikers — we suggest these great options from Arc’Teryx
  • Power Stretch Fleece by Patagonia — keeps you just warm enough but does not overheat you
  • Hats are essential for regulating your body heat — we’ve got a ton of great options such as these options from The North Face shown above
  • Socks that are thermo-regulating like Smartwool or Darn Tough
  • Yaktrax in the event of snow or ice
  • Camelbak backpack because even when it’s cold you need to stay hydrated!

Fun fact: we also rent cross-country skis for snowier days!

2. Ice Skating

The Ice Cube and Yost Arena for some indoor skating. If you’re feeling brave, Veterans Memorial and Buhr Park have outdoor skating as well! Before showing off your skills on the ice, stop by to pick up last minute accessories to make sure you stay warm:

  • Hats and gloves
  • Baselayers like these shown from Ice Breaker to stay warm
  • Socks, such as these options from Darn Tough, will keep your feet comfortable in the cold temperatures of the ice rink
  • A thermos because no ice skating trip is complete without a warm cup of hot chocolate to celebrate with after! This Hydroflask will keep it warm while you’re out on the ice.

3. Sledding

Veterans’ Park and The Arb are filled with hills that are perfect for family fun - just make sure you’re equipped with the correct gear so you don’t cut the trip short from being too cold and wet:

  • Snowpants from Patagonia to keep you warm and dry
  • Essential hats and warm, waterproof gloves such as these Gore-Tex options from The North Face (with hand warmers included!)
  • A flask or Yeti Rambler to keep drinks nice and warm while you enjoy your time in the snow!

We even have gear for your little ones as well!

4. Exploring Downtown

After you’re done enjoying the great winter activities Ann Arbor has to offer, make sure to take some time to enjoy the amazing variety of shops and food downtown! For dinner plans, head over to one of our staff picks: Sava’s, Knights, or Mani for food and drinks with a great atmosphere.
