Sweet Ypsi

Feb 01, 2017

I’m going to spend this Valentine’s Day with my latest crush … Ypsilanti. This stylish community just east of Ann Arbor is serving up all sorts of sweet treats this February — and all year long! Check out some of these great destinations and share with us your favorite place to get that chocolatey, sugary, decadent fix!

Go! Ice Cream

This quaint ice cream parlor in Downtown Ypsilanti will take you back in time as you sit at the counter, sipping an ice cream float made from small batch, artisan ice cream and house made syrups. The friendly people, delicious flavors, and seasonal specialties will have you coming back for more. A recent addition to the menu, the Brûléed Banana Split, is perfect for sharing (or not)! Owner and recipe mastermind, Rob Hess, loves experimenting with flavors and new menu items. Future specialties will include milkshakes and ice cream cakes!

Bona Sera

Just down the street from Go! Ice Cream is Bona Sera — specializing in “colorful comfort” food. Offering a full menu, Bona Sera is a fantastic date night destination if you want dinner plus dessert. In fact, Rob from Go! Ice Cream says the “salted caramel gelato is a thing of beauty.” Try it with a cup of Bona Sera’s specially roasted coffee from Roos Roast for a post-meal Affogato. Another coffee treat is the banoffee pie — if “yum” could physically manifest, this would be its chosen form. If you’re coffee-adverse, or just worried about caffeine after noon), the bread pudding will have you melting with joy. Bona Sera is offering a special menu for Valentine’s Day on Friday (2/10), Saturday (2/11), and Tuesday (2/14). Make your reservation today!

Dom Bakeries

Lovingly referred to simply as “Dom’s” by locals, this classic doughnut shop will have you embracing your inner Homer Simpson in no time. Serving donut connoisseurs since the 1970s, Dom’s is the best place to pick up those early morning (or late night) sweets. Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, Dom’s is probably best known for its apple fritter although there are plenty of other options — from red velvet cake to sour cream glaze. A quick “Know Before You Go” — Dom’s is a cash-only establishment.

The Rocket Candy & Novelties

This kaleidoscope of a store in Downtown Ypsilanti has shelves stocked from floor to ceiling with collectibles, novelty gifts, and Michigan-themed wearables — as well as the best candy selection in the area! Depending which decade you were born in, you may consider The Rocket’s candy offerings as either nostalgic or retro — although everyone can agree that it’s all fun! If you’re looking for that unique gift that will awe and delight, The Rocket is a great place to shop.
