2012 Ann Arbor Peony Festival - Celebrating 90 Years

Help celebrate the 90th anniversary of the famed Nichols Arboretum Peony Garden (1922-2012), the largest collection of antique and heirloom peonies in North America. Enjoy Live music on June 2, a preview of Shakespeare in the Arb (Merry Wives of Windsor) on June 3, self-guided tours, cut-flower display in the Reader Center, and more.
Where else can one see more than 230 different kinds of peonies in bloom? This is a spectacular historic collection - and one of the largest in North America - from the early 20th century. It presents the best ornamental peonies of its era. The Peony garden typically blooms between mid-May and mid-June. The best time for viewing the stunningly beautiful and fragrant display is during early to mid-June, depending on the weather. The garden has 27 beds, each full square originally holding 30 plants. The plants were arranged so that the garden would bloom progressively, with the western edge (closest to the Washington Heights entrance) peaking first. Over time, that has changed through relocation, loss, and division of the plants. However, many of the original plants are thriving exactly where they were planted many decades ago.
Admission is free. Nichols Arboretum is open sunrise to sunset.

The Underground Railroad was a network of secret routes, hidden places, determined citizens and self-liberated people of color seeking freedom. Two essential routes to Detroit and ultimate safety in Canada crossed in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. Discover the role Washtenaw County played on this docent guided tour by the exteriors of local and nationally-known Underground Railroad landmarks, sites and homes.
The tour season runs April-October, we also offer talks and presentations. Those without transportation are encouraged to call at least three weeks before the scheduled dates.

Cinetopia International Film Festival

The Michigan Theater is excited to announce the first Cinetopia International Film Festival, presented by AT&T, taking place Thursday May 31 -Sunday June 3, 2012.
Cinetopia will focus on presenting feature length, story-based films – dramas, comedies and documentary films that have screened at the world’s best film festivals featuring performances by Emily Blunt, Geoffrey Rush, Blythe Danner, Sacha Baron Cohen, Barbara Streisand, Ben Kingsley, Warren Beatty, Mark Duplass, Jess Weixler and many more. Special programs will explore 60 years of 3-D films and 3-D film technology, celebrate the work of UM screenwriting grad David Newman (“Bonnie & Clyde,” “What’s Up Doc” and “Superman”) and the silent film comedy of Harold Lloyd.
But mostly, the more than 30 films, screened over four days, will be the brightest and the best of contemporary films now playing the international festival circuit. Films will be screened in the Michigan Theater’s historic auditorium, the State Theater and the University of Michigan’s Angell Hall; additional special programs will be presented at the main branch of the Ann Arbor District Library.
Michigan Theater members will have special pre-sale opportunities beginning May 3. Individual film tickets will be $15, $12 for members. Ticket packages will be available. Tickets go on sale to the general public on May 10.

These Star Talk shows will be 30 minutes long and focus on what you can see in the night sky. In anticipation of Spring, we will be reading aloud The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle at 6:00 and 7:00 pm in the planetarium. This free story time will feature images from the book on the planetarium dome. Space is limited to 36 people and children must be accompanied by an adult. From humble beginnings in 1973, the Annual Chelsea Painters Art Fair has gone on to become the area’s premier Fine Arts fair. Twenty-five to thirty highly accomplished artists exhibit work done in a variety of media: watercolor, encaustic, gouache, acrylic, oil, pastels, monotype and mixed media.
All pieces on display are original pieces of Fine Art.
Many of the artists also display hand-crafted note cards suitable for framing.

The hills, trees and backwoods riverbanks of Michigan's Huron River Drive are the setting for the annual Dexter to Ann Arbor Run, a road race event with a half-marathon, a 10K, a 5K and a kids fun run that takes runners on a course exactly as its name suggests, from the town of Dexter along an eastward route along the Huron River to the finish in downtown Ann Arbor. The event also includes a separate 10k, the USATF 10k Masters Championship that starts 2 minutes before the regular 10k. The Ann Arbor Track Club manages the entire event and is hosting the Masters Championship for the 3rd year in a row in 2012.

Shakespeare in the Arb 2012: Featuring the Merry Wives of Windsor

Directed by Kate Mendeloff and presented by the University of Michigan Residential College and the University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens & Nichols Arboretum. The beloved Shakespeare in the Arb is now in its twelfth season and remains a very popular tradition in Ann Arbor.
The unique experience of Shakespeare in the Arb comes from the environmental staging of the plays. There is no fixed stage — instead, the audience follows the action through different locations in the Arboretum. The staging takes advantage of the vistas and valleys, and the special arrangements of the surrounding natural settings. The wide open space of the Arb becomes a panoramic stage, creating a more realistic setting than if every scene was played out directly in front of you. As one audience member commented, “The actors used the vastness of its Arb stage to full advantage, making entrances from behind trees, appearing over rises and vanishing into the woods.
Box Office opens at 5:30 pm for general admission. Shows start at 6:30. Ticket prices: Matthaei-Nichols members: $15; students with ID: $10; adults 19 and over: $20; seniors 62 and over: $17; children and youth 5-17: $10; 5 and under free.

It's the first ever Ann Arbor Marathon! All courses start on Main Street at the NW corner of the Big House, running through downtown Ann Arbor with a finish on the 50 yard line of Elbel Field. The courses will showcase many of the most beautiful and memorable areas of the UM campus and the city of Ann Arbor as well as the stunning views along the Huron River. The Ann Arbor Marathon will raise much needed funding for the Ann Arbor Public Schools Educational Foundation!

The circus is coming to Leslie Science & Nature Center! Hailing from Pittsburgh, PA, Zany Umbrella Circus doesn’t have elephants, animals, or three rings. Instead, it uses magic, storytelling, street theater, and visual arts to put on an unforgettable show. For us, they will perform Stories of the Season, a show that celebrates the seasons and the natural world. This interactive performance includes acrobatics on aerial fabric and trapeze, fire juggling, and slack rope walking. It’s a charming, entertaining, unforgettable experience. This is an outside event. Please join us for this fundraising event- all proceeds benefit our environmental education programs.

The Great Race is an antique, vintage, and collector car competitive controlled-speed endurance road rally on public highways. It is not a test of top speed. It is a test of a driver/navigator team’s ability to follow precise course instructions and the car’s (and team’s) ability to endure on a cross-country trip. The course instructions require the competing teams to drive at or below the posted speed limits at all times. The Great Race makes one of its final stops right here in Ypsilanti.

53rd Annual Ann Arbor Art Fair

This event, which is composed of 4 independent fairs, draws more than 1,000 artists and more than half a million visitors over 4 days. In addition to the fairs, there are free concerts and a variety of food and drink vendors.
The Ann Arbor Street Art Fair, the Original (734-994-5260) is at Ingalls Mall between North University and W. Washington.
The State Street Area Art Fair (734-663-6511) is in the shopping districts around State and Liberty.
The Ann Arbor Summer Art Fair (734-662-3382) has a downtown section on Main and Liberty and a campus section on S. State.
Ann Arbor's South University Art Fair (734-663-5300) occupies most of the South University business district and adjoining East University and Church.

Sounds & Sights Festival in Chelsea

The Sounds & Sights Festival is an annual summer festival in historic and culturally savvy Chelsea, Michigan. The event started over three decades ago as merchant sidewalk sales and has since burgeoned into a highlight of summer that draws visitors from all over the state and beyond. The two-day, three-night event features an open-air art market, live music, a food and social tent, children's entertainment and activities, a classic car show, and much more. The open-air art market is back for its 2nd year and expanding, after a successful debut in 2011 at this popular festival and the organizers are looking for artists and fine craftsmen and women to be a part of the event.
The Sounds & Sights Festival will also feature SculptureWalk, 10 Sculptures will be juried into the exhibit and installed outdoor, on concrete pads in high profile locations in historic downtown Chelsea, Michigan. Online and print brochures will be provided to the public to inspire self-guided walking tours of the exhibit. Guided docent tours will also be available.

We at The Pet Emporium are excited to announce our 5th annual Pet Festival, to be held August 11th & 12th, 2012! Pet Fest, a 2-day event this year, will be located at the Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds between Ann Arbor and Saline.
Our festival has enjoyed a great response, over the years, with thousands in attendance and hundreds of pets finding homes. Plus, our guests have discovered countless local products and services provided by a growing number of exhibitors each year.
Pet Fest is the largest pet festival in southeastern Michigan with an annual attendance of nearly 5,000 passionate pet owners. Our goal is to help local rescue groups and shelters find homes for foster pets and to offer a venue to artisans, service providers, and vendors where they may display to the public. We have enjoyed hosting over a 100 diverse and interesting booths each year and we are dedicated to making Pet Fest fun for all, exhibitors and attendees alike.

The Jamboree is a family event with free admission and free activities for all ages, including great live music all day by a popular band, hayrides, animals to pet, pony rides, lots of games and activities for children, a rock climbing wall, tours of the 74 acre farm, and live and silent auctions, including a gift table with a variety of donated goods and services - many at bargain prices! Food and beverages will be available. Our 'Fellow Traveler' award ceremony will honor one or more supporters for their contributions to Dawn Farm and the recovering community. Dawn Farm welcomes old friends and new friends to join us and share in celebrating our successes in helping people with alcohol and other drug additions become part of the recovering community, and to celebrate the tremendous power of hope, recovery and community in the lives of individuals, families, and our entire society. Funds raised from the sales and auctions will help defray treatment costs for individuals who need help and lack resources.

In the fall each year Dexter area residents are now familiar with the appearance of orange signs at intersections, posters in store windows, and those little orange postcards in their mailboxes -- all reminders that Art on the Farm, the small but much-loved art show, will be held on the last Sunday in October once again. This year will mark the 8th year that the show has been held at the farm of Lauren Kingsley and her husband Jack Spack, Jr. It started as an open house with about 15 artists and has now grown to about 30, and they work in every media from landscape painting and stained glass to soaps, book arts and jewelry.

Rails on Wheels’ Southeast Michigan Train Show

Rails on Wheels was formed in 1988 by a group of model railroaders interested in constructing, displaying and operating a high-performance HO scale model railroad. At the time, only one of the members had the space available for a permanent layout, so we each began to build small, portable sections that could be joined together, incorporating the specifications that would eventually become the Rails on Wheels Module Standards. To promote our goals of educating our members and the public about railroading and the hobby of model railroading, our activities have included monthly meetings and workshops, layout setups at over 75 train shows and the NMRA National Conventions in 1992 and 1997, private layout setups, railfanning outings and trips to train shows and swap meets.
