“Red” is a six-time Tony Award-winning drama by John Logan. “Red” begins previewing on April 19 and runs through May 27, 2012. It is directed by Performance Network Executive Director, Carla Milarch and features Kevin Young and Mark Rademacher as the artist Mark Rothko.
For two years from 1956-58, the abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko worked feverishly in his Bowery St. studio on Manhattan’s lower East side, on what was at the time the highest-paid commission in art history. A Russian immigrant Jew from humble beginnings, he worked on a series of enormous murals that would adorn that bastion of capitalism - the famous Four Seasons Restaurant in Mies Van der Rohe’s Seagrams Building. John Logan’s Tony-winning play paints a picture of the fiery artist as he works intensely on the paintings, with the help of his apprentice Ken, and struggles with his personal demons to bring forth what would ultimately be his life’s greatest achievement.
Weekly performances of “Red” are Thursdays at 7:30, Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 2pm, with 3pm Saturday matinees on May 5 and May 19.

LePop Gallery Presents: Xuan Alyfe

LePop is a traveling pop-up art gallery intended to breathe new life into underutilized corporate spaces available for lease or sale (this particular gallery will be on the bottom floor of the Comerica building at 101 N. Main Street in downtown Ann Arbor).
The LePop Gallery will be embracing the spring season with some cross-cultural pollination. Xuan Alyfe is a young street artist making his first visit to the U.S. from his native Spain to be something of an “artist in residence” at the gallery for the month of April. Xuan’s murals and installations on the streets of Spain evoke Miro and Kandinsky - if Kandinsky had grown up listening to punk. His work is playful yet strongly geometric, primitive and at the same time unexpectedly whimsical.
The gallery will open to the public on April 20th with an opening reception from 8 p.m. until midnight. In typical Charlie LaCroix style, great music and top notch refreshments sponsored by Arbor Brewing Company will be on hand. Those who can’t make it out for opening night will still have a chance to catch Xuan’s esoteric, arcane, spiritual and cosmological cultural offerings. The show will run April 20-May 13, with normal gallery hours Monday-Wednesday 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Thursday-Saturday noon until 9 p.m.

The Underground Railroad was a network of secret routes, hidden places, determined citizens and self-liberated people of color seeking freedom. Two essential routes to Detroit and ultimate safety in Canada crossed in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. Discover the role Washtenaw County played on this docent guided tour by the exteriors of local and nationally-known Underground Railroad landmarks, sites and homes.
The tour season runs April-October, we also offer talks and presentations. Those without transportation are encouraged to call at least three weeks before the scheduled dates.

Cinetopia International Film Festival
Events and Screenings take place at the Michigan Theater, the State Theater, Angell Hall on U of M's campus, and the Ann Arbor District Library
The Michigan Theater is excited to announce the first Cinetopia International Film Festival, presented by AT&T, taking place Thursday May 31 -Sunday June 3, 2012.
Cinetopia will focus on presenting feature length, story-based films – dramas, comedies and documentary films that have screened at the world’s best film festivals featuring performances by Emily Blunt, Geoffrey Rush, Blythe Danner, Sacha Baron Cohen, Barbara Streisand, Ben Kingsley, Warren Beatty, Mark Duplass, Jess Weixler and many more. Special programs will explore 60 years of 3-D films and 3-D film technology, celebrate the work of UM screenwriting grad David Newman (“Bonnie & Clyde,” “What’s Up Doc” and “Superman”) and the silent film comedy of Harold Lloyd.
But mostly, the more than 30 films, screened over four days, will be the brightest and the best of contemporary films now playing the international festival circuit. Films will be screened in the Michigan Theater’s historic auditorium, the State Theater and the University of Michigan’s Angell Hall; additional special programs will be presented at the main branch of the Ann Arbor District Library.
Michigan Theater members will have special pre-sale opportunities beginning May 3. Individual film tickets will be $15, $12 for members. Ticket packages will be available. Tickets go on sale to the general public on May 10.

Summer Classics Series Presents: Creature from The Black Lagoon

This summer, the 2012 Bell’s Summer Classic Film Series at the Michigan Theater will bring Westerns and Musicals, Comedies and Blockbusters to the silver screen for one of the best Summer Classic Film Series yet. There will be eye-popping 3D, giant sharks, classic literary adaptations, and a magical fairy-tale world, all of it packed into fifteen films, all summer long.
This year, the Michigan Theater’s Bell’s Summer Classic Film Series begins on the final day of Cinetopia - the four-day regional film festival hosted by the Michigan Theater - with the 1950’s classic monster horror film Creature from the Black Lagoon - in 3D. As part of the Cinetopia 3D screenings, Creature From the Black Lagoon, which was originally filmed and released in 3-D in 1954, plays Sunday, June 3rd at 1:30pm with an encore screening on Tuesday, June 5th at 7pm. The screenings will be held at the Michigan Theater.
Each of the 15 films in the summer-long series will be shown twice – on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 and again the following Tuesday evening at 7pm – with the exception of Casablanca, shown only on Labor Day

Dexter to Ann Arbor Race

The hills, trees and backwoods riverbanks of Michigan's Huron River Drive are the setting for the annual Dexter to Ann Arbor Run, a road race event with a half-marathon, a 10K, a 5K and a kids fun run that takes runners on a course exactly as its name suggests, from the town of Dexter along an eastward route along the Huron River to the finish in downtown Ann Arbor. The event also includes a separate 10k, the USATF 10k Masters Championship that starts 2 minutes before the regular 10k. The Ann Arbor Track Club manages the entire event and is hosting the Masters Championship for the 3rd year in a row in 2012.

Participating members of the Ann Arbor Women Artists group will present a sale of original artworks created from the 2012 gardens over the past year, capturing the beauty of these unique landscapes. A Garden Marketplace, presented by Artistica in Dexter, will offer a variety of handcrafted garden-related merchandise, including pottery, jewelry, garden art, and more.
Proceeds from the 2012 Garden Walk will benefit Growing Hope, an Ypsilanti-based non-profit dedicated to helping people improve their lives and communities through gardening and access to healthy food. Tickets go on sale in May.

It's the first ever Ann Arbor Marathon! All courses start on Main Street at the NW corner of the Big House, running through downtown Ann Arbor with a finish on the 50 yard line of Elbel Field. The courses will showcase many of the most beautiful and memorable areas of the UM campus and the city of Ann Arbor as well as the stunning views along the Huron River. The Ann Arbor Marathon will raise much needed funding for the Ann Arbor Public Schools Educational Foundation!

Victor Wooten: A high-wire act on low-pitched strings
Hailed as the most influential bassist since Jaco Pastorius, Victor Wooten is known for his solo recordings and tours, and as a member of the Grammy-winning supergroup Bela Fleck & The Flecktones. He is an innovator on the bass guitar, as well as a talented composer, arranger, producer, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist. Continuing the tradition of virtuosity forged by James Brown, Funkadelic, and Prince, Victor will make you wonder how he could possibly be creating his incredible bass effects in real time. His show is a high-wire act on low-pitched strings that owes some of its inspiration to another Wooten mentor, the inimitable Bootsy Collins. A three-time winner of Bass Player magazine's Bass Player of the Year award, Victor Wooten is a musical experience not to be missed!

Two essential routes to Detroit and ultimate safety in Canada crossed in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. Discover the role Washtenaw County played on this docent guided tour by the exteriors of local and nationally-known Underground Railroad landmarks, sites and homes.
The tour season runs April-October, we also offer talks and presentations. Those without transportation are encouraged to call at least three weeks before the scheduled dates.

In a way, Edwin McCain began sowing the seeds of Mercy Bound, his tenth album and debut for 429 Records, seven years ago. The songs comprising Mercy Bound are the fruits of an on-again, off-again collaboration with fellow singer/songwriter Maia Sharp that began in 2004 with their lovely duet "Say Anything." Since co-writing and tracking that song, McCain and Sharp have kept up their friendship and creative partnership. They decided to make Mercy Bound their first full-album collaboration.
And that collaboration has offered McCain, some 20 years into his career, a chance to try something new—not only with someone who's worked with everyone from the Dixie Chicks to Art Garfunkel, but also someone who had an eerie habit of being able to get deep inside his head, he says with a laugh.
Like such McCain signature songs as "3 a.m." and "I'll Be," the horn- and Rhodes piano-tinged tracks comprising the Sharp-produced Mercy Bound are classic Edwin. They're story songs about lovesick romantics or truth seekers stumbling around life trying to make sense of all their good luck, or of situations gone awry; pop-tinged sing-alongs written on acoustic guitars jammed with percolating hooks.

53rd Annual Ann Arbor Art Fair

This event, which is composed of 4 independent fairs, draws more than 1,000 artists and more than half a million visitors over 4 days. In addition to the fairs, there are free concerts and a variety of food and drink vendors.
The Ann Arbor Street Art Fair, the Original (734-994-5260) is at Ingalls Mall between North University and W. Washington.
The State Street Area Art Fair (734-663-6511) is in the shopping districts around State and Liberty.
The Ann Arbor Summer Art Fair (734-662-3382) has a downtown section on Main and Liberty and a campus section on S. State.

"A lot of people tell me they don't like country music, but they like what I am doing," says Junior Brown. "I hear that line more than anything else," which is ironic because a couple of licks is all it takes to erase any doubts concerning Junior's stylistic allegiance. His music combines the soul of country and the spirit of rock n' roll.
In Junior's case, playing everywhere from the Grand Ole Opry to rock showcases on the West Coast and his hometown of Austin, Texas, *crossover* is not synonymous with watered-down or light-weight. He says of his ever-growing legion of converts: Just about the time they label me as some old time honkytonk singer, I throw something new in there that surprises them. And then they'll appreciate the traditional styles of country music too. Do something to wow them without ruining the roots of country and they end up accepting the music that they would have been prejudiced against.

The Ark Presents: Mindy Smith

Mindy Smith was born and raised in Long Island, N.Y., but moved to Knoxville, Tenn., with her father after the death of her mother in 1991. In the South, she soaked up the sounds of Appalachia and fell in love with acoustic, jazz and blues music. She moved to Nashville in 1998 to pursue a career in music and developed her unique vocal style, writing and acoustic skills while performing and singing at clubs and writers nights.
Smith won the 2000 Tin Pan South writers contest and signed a publishing deal with Big Yellow Dog Music in 2001. At the famed music conference South by Southwest in 2003, Lee Ann Womack invited her to perform "Come to Jesus," after singing harmonies during Womack's set.
As the only new artist featured on the 2003 tribute album Just Because I'm a Woman: The Songs of Dolly Parton, Smith revived "Jolene." (Parton appeared in the video as well.) Smith wrote all the songs on her debut album One Moment More, was released on Vanguard Records in early 2004.

The 16th annual Edgefest (October 31 - Nov 3, 2012) will explore new music created by today’s American improvisers and composers who now, more than ever, are reaching back to multiple artistic roots, reflecting a growing awareness of the cultural complexity of contemporary American society. The accumulations of different origins, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, filtered by contemporary, uniquely American experiences, have produced a cornucopia of new music; a blending of improvisational-avant jazz with the composers’ own—often multiple--artistic/cultural roots.
In the tradition of Edgefest the roster includes international musicians as well as performers and ensembles from our home community of Southeast Michigan and showcases some of the most celebrated and creative multi-instrumentalists on the scene today.
