UMMA Projects: Cory Arcangel
University of Michigan Museum of Art, 525 S. State St., Ann Arbor
734-763-UMMA
Cory Arcangel (b. 1977, New York) is often described as a “digital media” artist, although he is more fully understood as an artist concerned with the forms and processes of digital and media culture. Having first gained widespread recognition for his reworking of obsolete video game systems, his practice has grown to encompass imagery and sound drawn from across popular culture, ranging from Guns and Roses' iconic Sweet Child of Mine music video to Glenn Gould’s landmark recording of Bach’s Goldberg Variations.
Arcangel, who studied classical performance and electronic music composition (under tape-music pioneer Pauline Oliveros) at the Oberlin Conservatory, approaches these familiar sources—and the technology by which they are delivered—with the unusual but effective combination of compositional rigor and pitch-perfect deadpan humor. Arcangel’s work has appeared in numerous important group exhibitions and has attracted international attention in recent years. This will be Arcangel’s first solo exhibition in a North American museum. His installation at UMMA is a newly commissioned work.

Tradition Transformed: Chang Ku-nien, Master Painter of the 20th Century
University of Michigan Museum of Art, 525 S. State St., Ann Arbor
734-763-UMMA
This exhibition features the work of Chang Ku-nien (1906–1987), a versatile and proficient practitioner of the ancient tradition of Chinese painting, and explores his development as an artist over a lifetime. Trained in Shanghai, Chang resettled in Taiwan after the political upheaval of 1949. This experience compelled him to carry on the tradition of Chinese painting, which was considerably diminished in China during the Culture Revolution. A member of the fabled Seven Friends Painting Society in Taiwan, Chang responded dynamically to the vitality of his new environment and second homeland, where he freely experimented with new techniques to portray local nature and landscape themes. In his later years, he traveled between Taiwan and the United States and created a highly expressive, personal, and sensitive vision of the landscapes of North America.
On display Jan. 23-April 18, 2010.

"Isaac Newton was not humanity's first scientist. He was our last sorcerer."
Still considered by many to be one of the most influential men in human history, Isaac Newton's discoveries in science and mathematics rocked the world during the seventeenth century, though the man himself considered his most heralded achievements to be only fragments of the most important work of his life. The Ghost Army Exhibit
Hatcher Graduate Library, Gallery in Room 100, 913 S. University, Ann Arbor
734-615-5783
The Ghost Army is here! In June of 1944, an exceptional U.S. Army unit went into action in Normandy. Its weapons included hundreds of inflatable tanks and a one-of-a-kind collection of sound effects records, and it carried out its battlefield mission without firing a shot. The unit was officially called the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops, but it was known to its men as The Ghost Army.
Members of The Ghost Army adhered to a decades-long gag order; many never told their families about their extraordinary military service. Sixty-five years after this top-secret group went into action, the University of Michigan’s Hatcher Library will unveil the first public exhibit of this captivating group of materials documenting The Ghost Army. This exhibit is available during library hours. See http://www.lib.umich.edu/hatcher-graduate-library.

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band at The Ark
The Ark, 316 N. Main St., Ann Arbor
734-763-TKTS
The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band came together as a jug band in 1966, say the members, because they were trying to figure out a way not to have to work for a living. Almost 45 years later, with original members John McEuen, Jeff Hanna, and Jimmie Fadden still on board, they remain one of the hardest-working bands in show business.
They had an evergreen hit with Jerry Jeff Walker's "Mr. Bojangles" in 1970, moved to Nashville, and reunited several generations of country musicians on the classic three-LP set "Will the Circle Be Unbroken." They went on to mainstream country success with a series of albums in the 1970s and 1980s that were wonderfully songwriter-oriented (request their version of Steve Goodman's "Don't Get Sand in It" if you get a chance), and took home a Country Music Association Album of the Year award for "Will the Circle Be Unbroken, Volume Two" in 1989.
They've remained one of country's great attractions in concert ever since, and they're making a rare Michigan appearance in support of their new release, "Speed of Life," featuring 11 original songs plus covers of "Going Up the Country" and "Stuck in the Middle with You."

Massimiliano Valenti has emerged as one of the most interesting pianists of his generation. He studied at the Musical Institute "V. Bellini" in Catania, where he graduated with top honors. Subsequently, he refined his artistic training in Germany, Italy and Romania. While studying in France, he deepened his knowledge of French repertoire. His talent has opened the way to a brilliant career. He has become the host of important organizations and festivals in Italy and abroad (Austria, Portugal, Romania, Germany and USA). In addition, he has given master classes at the University of Music in Aveiro, Conservatory of Oporto and Fundão (Portugal), and at the Faculty of Music in Timisoara (Romania), where he has worked regularly since 2005. Mr. Valenti was invited to be part of juries in national and international piano competitions both in Italy and abroad.
In September 2008, Mr. Valenti released his first album, Piano Recital, on the Casa Musicale ECO label. The CD includes music by Rameau, Satie, Messiaen and Gershwin, and is gaining critical praise in the media nationally and internationally. He is a complete artist; his current musical career has grown from an early passion for painting. Even today, he continues to receive accolades from all over the world for the passion and emotion that he manages to convey in his visual art. Moshe Kasher
314 East Liberty St., Ann Arbor
734-996-9080
Moshe Kasher. Comedian. Jew. Jew Comedian. OBGYN. Pleasure center. Good tipper. Guiding light. Beefcake. He lives alone in LA. This is his comedy debut at the Comedy Showcase. Like many comedians of his ilk, Moshe Kasher is riddled with contradictions. He's Jewish, but insisted on cutting his hair in an oh-so-fashionable "Gay Hitler" style he calls a "Gitler". He's self-conscious about his thin, wiry frame, but brags about his virility. Above all, he presents himself as an enlightened progressive, but takes great pleasure in offending his audiences. In Kasher's universe, no group is spared: gays, Jews, gentiles, non-English speakers, metrosexuals, buyers of thrift-store underwear, cops, senior citizens, and denizens of Modesto all get the hatchet. "If at any point tonight, you do become offended by what you hear, that's okay, you're a big girl, and you can do that," Kasher says early on in a bit called "Ground Rules." "But please do not tell me after the show," he continues," "because I don't really care."
Moshe has appeared on the Independent Film Channel, Jamie Foxx's "Laffapalooza," “Montreal Just For Laughs Festival,” “Bridgetown Comedy Festival,” “Sfsketchfest” and the “Aspen Rooftop Comedy Festival” (where he won "Best of the Fest." I know, crazy right?) He’s also in the movie “Make a Wish” due out later this year, and the movie “Sorry, Thanks” released last year. He’s also been a featured comedian on Comedy Central’s “Live at Gotham.”
People really seem to like Moshe. Things people have said:
"Smart, dirty, sharp, self-deprecating and ultimately hilarious." -- Denver Post
"Has a powerful comedic voice and amazingly wide range."-- Punchline Magazine
Don't miss this clever, smartly edgy, politically incorrect jokester. This show contains material and subjects that are politically incorrect and you will hear offensive things. If you are easily offended – don’t see this show!

38th Annual Dance for Mother Earth Powwow
Saline Middle School Fieldhouse, 7190 N Maple Road, Saline, Michigan, 48176
The beginning of April marks the time of the annual Ann Arbor Dance for Mother Earth Powwow, a nationally recognized beginning of the powwow season.
The powwow attracts American Indian dancers, singers and drummers from throughout the nation. Dancers ranging in age from toddlers to elders compete in several styles of dance---fancy, traditional, grass and jingle dress---wearing traditional and contemporary regalia. Competing drum groups provide vocal and rhythmic accompaniment to the dancers as they themselves are judged. Cash prizes are presented to winners in all the competitions.
A variety of American Indian culture is expressed through vendor exhibits of arts, crafts, music, contemporary and traditional foods, and information on social and political issues that currently challenge local, regional and national American Indian communities.
A commitment to heritage pervades the two-day event. Participants share opening and closing prayers, special giveaways, and a shared dedication to the spiritual aspects of American Indian cultures.
This is a culturally significant event that we hope the media take notice of and share with their audiences. We ask you to help us spread word of the event so that it will be a continued success for years to come. For more information, please see our press release.

Tom Foss
314 East Liberty St., Ann Arbor
734-996-9080
Tom Foss is a high-energy, highly animated comic, who acts out his fascinating (and immense) archive of jokes reflecting on himself, his family, his home of West Virginia, and the world around him. Audiences and industry often compare Tom to George Carlin and Robin Williams. We think he’d be perfect for the blue collar tour. Though his audiences will agree his show doesn’t need it, Tom is always working to improve. It’s not uncommon to see Tom with a pen in his hand, jotting down brand new material, seconds before he’s announced onstage.
Tom Foss has performed everywhere, from Las Vegas showrooms and Norwegian Cruise Lines, to Iraq. He’s always the consummate professional, and he passionately believes he owes every individual audience member the best show he has to give, every show.
As part of Comic's On Duty in 2005-2007, Tom Foss traveled around the world seven times and was on top of it once! Entertaining our troops in Iraq three times, Afghanistan three times, Kuwait four times, Italy, Spain, England, Greece, Belgium, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar, Africa, USS Enterprise, USS Boxer, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Greenland, Hawaii and all across The United States. While entertaining the troops overseas, Foss has managed to keep a foot back here in the states as a regular at the Improv's and Funnybones. He can also be heard regularly on XM Radio, Sirius Radio and “The Bob and Tom Show.” High-energy, rapid-fire, and very funny comedy is what you'll see at his show.

UMMA Projects: Oliver van den Berg
University of Michigan Museum of Art, 525 South State Street, Ann Arbor, MI, 48109
(734)764.0395
Berlin-based sculptor Oliver van den Berg produces objects based on such technical equipment as flight recorders, planetarium projectors, and—most recently—enormous banks of microphones or television cameras. Instantly recognizable, van den Berg's works derive their uncanny presence from the fact that they are made entirely of wood. Standing in direct opposition to the material and function of their models, van den Berg's carved replicas question the past century's faith in technology in the utopian pursuit of “progress.” In his most recent installations, the proliferation of nonfunctional recording devices makes a decidedly low-tech comment on our contemporary society of surveillance by transforming the exhibition space into a sort of absurd press conference, as oversized as it is dysfunctional.
This project is made possible in part by the University of Michigan Office of the President and UMMA's New Visions Venture Fund including the Dr. Robert and Janet Miller Fund.

Jackson Road Cruise
Jackson Rd., Between Wagner Rd. and Baker Rd.
The Jackson Road Cruise is the first car event of the summer season.
Is it a “classic” driver in a “classy” car or a “classy” driver in a “classic” car? That’s in the eye of the beholder!
Classic Car Club of America defines “classic” as a “fine” or “distinctive” auto, either American or foreign built, produced between 1925 and 1948. For a classic license a vehicle must be: A motor vehicle, but not a reproduction thereof, manufactured at least 15 years prior to the current year which has been maintained in or restored to a condition which is substantially in conformity with manufacturer specifications and appearance. Sleek lines, elegant styling, outstanding engineering, and fine workmanship all come to mind in describing a classic vehicle. Then there are those vehicles that fit the timeline but are “mutts” and we all still love a “mutt”. So bring the family and come on down to this event and have fun!
