University of Michigan Power Center for the Performing Arts
121 Fletcher St., Ann Arbor
(734) 763-3333
This premier state-of-the-art theater hosts grand operas and sweeping dramas. Opened in 1971, the interior was designed by Jo Mielziner, and echoes his work in the Vivian Beaumont Theater at Lincoln Center. The Power Center for the Performing Arts combines massive concrete columns and mirrored glass with ancient forms. The seating area is modeled after the Greek theater at Epidarus; with no seat more than 80 ft. from the stage. The spacious, soaring lobby features tapestries by Roy Lichtenstein and Pablo Picasso.
