University of Michigan Historical Markers Walking Tour
In n 1837, as chartered by the constitution of the then-new state of Michigan, the University was located in Ann Arbor. A predecessor, University of Michigania, was founded in Detroit in 1817. Spurred by the vision of its first president in Ann Arbor, Henry Tappan, and sharing the bounty of a rapidly expanding stateeconomy, the University quickly developed into one the major institutions of higher education in the United States.
